All about crows
Let’s go outside today and see the sky. So, there are cool birds outside. One bird is the crow. They are cool, but what is a crow?
Crows are smart birds. Crows can include other birds in the Corvidae family like jays and nutcrackers. They can also be ravens and rooks. Crows are small, but they have bigger brains than most birds. A crow actually has a brain size of a walnut, and they have dense neurons. So, more neurons mean that an animal can be smart even if it has a small brain.
So, Crows eat garbage in cities. Crows also eat bugs and insects. In agriculture, crows eat crops, but they also eat animals that eat crops. They also eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and eggs. They get meat from animals. Crows are omnivores. “Omnivore” means that that an animal eats meat and produce. We are omnivores.
Crows can also hide food. Hiding keeps their food safe from other animals. They don’t always remember to collect the food that they hid catches. Sometimes, the hidden nuts grow into plants. Sometimes, ravens can steal hidden food.
Crows have different dialects. A crow must learn a dialect to join a group. Crows add noises to their vocabulary. They can do that to human speech. Crows can learn aspects of human speech when kept in captivity. Crows usually say “caw” to alert danger.
Crows have altricial babies. Altricial means they are blind and helpless. They can not care for themselves. Crows babies are weird-looking because they don’t look like adult crows. Then, the crows turn into fledglings. They still look weird. Their parents can dive bomb people if they come too close to fledglings.
Crows use tools. The New Caledonian Crow is the main user of tools. They use sticks to get food. They use other tools too which they can make. These crows live in islands with a few predators. Other crows use tools too.
